Visual Art & Math
Visual Art &
Math is an exciting new residency and professional
development program developed by A.R.T. Artist Kaja
Overstreet. Employing art projects and using images
from throughout art history as touchstones for
teaching concepts such as symmetry, geometry,
fractions, and counting, the Visual Art & Math
program finds exciting ways to repackage and
present, in fun and educational terms, math and
science. The program is designed to connect with
students in grades kindergarten through eighth
grade, as well as teachers looking for new
possibilities in presenting mathematical concepts
to their students. A.R.T. unveiled the program
recently at a Math and Science Cluster meeting in
January, and received resoundingly positive
feedback from the group of educators, MCLTs and
administrators. A.R.T. Artists Kaja Overstreet,
William Estrada, Gail Wolf and Matt Woods were on
hand to demonstrate a variety of projects to
educators: clay building, printmaking, and
tetrahedron kite-making that highlighted just some
of the ways to use art as a visual and hands-on
learning tool to approach difficult math concepts.
